ALICE IM WUNDERLAND

SYNPOSIS IDEA

A girl was taking for ransom when she was young, parents couldn’t get money got killed, she escaped. Now she’s out to get Revenge.

Using an interactive medium you have to help her get revenge, using tools and clues that develop over the game. Its told in past tense; “I knew what would happen, id have revenge or die trying.” a click based, narrated interactive website with the emphasis on character and story.

It will be loosely based on Alice in Wonderland but will employ some references to that original fable. Set in gritty modern day London, an illustrated piece with emphasis on realism of the characters and an “urban” look at it.

Based strongly around the narrative, the interaction leading you one way, or the other. Twist will occur and It will require complete immersion from the player.

It will combine video clips, namely landscapes and scenery heavily edited to suit the dark aesthetics. On top of that illustrations and slow animation, this is in reference to fairytales and how they are originally presented.

Based around 2 main characters, “Alice” and “The mad hatter” who captured her long ago.

OUT.OF.CLASS.

STRUCTURE::

  1. Out-of-class exercise. Within your groups complete the following exercise
  2. Publish your ideas on your blog
  3. Present your ideas to the whole group during the next IMT lecture session on the 1 December 08.

TASK::

Each of the images below depicts a variation on the narrative of ‘Red Riding Hood’. They reveal how a narrative can be 'international, transhistorical, transcultural' (Barthes 1977, 79) and exist outside of its specific moderation by both author and reader.

In your narratives group, focus on ONE of the images below.

According to your interpretations, break the narrative of each image apart into ‘nodes’ of action/events and come up with alternative ‘interactive’ variations to this narrative of the group's own choosing. How would you be able to play with or tell an alternative story interactively?

In this picture Red Riding Hood is in bed with the wolf, so I can see these events having happened, or to happen:

  • Red is surprised and tries to escape
  • The Wolf tries to attack Red
  • Red doesn’t realise the wolf isnt her Nan
  • The Wolf has replaced her nan
  • Red has just got back from somewhere

Interactivity could be through who attacks who and the outcome of that:

  • The wolf could eat Red and after the lumberjack hears her screams, the wolf could possibly eat him as well.
  • Red could attack the wolf and when the lumberjack enters, she could maybe attack him also thinking he is trying to hurt her.
  • The lumberjack could come in kill both of them either on purpose or by accident.

Could be either of the characters to decide what happens.

NARRATIVES.BRIEF.08.09.

A new brief has reared it's ugly head.
The Brief

Choose a well-known fairy or folk story as the starting point for conceiving an interactive narrative, which you will develop, script, design and produce. Your final story may wind up entirely different from the original tale, but in your story development plan, you must be able explain what were the origins of the idea and how this eveloved to the final story.

For example, the tale of Goldilocks could be used as a metaphor for a modern day story about a burglary whereby the perpetrator breaks in to a house. Three stages during the burglary are revealed through a combination of gameplay and interactive narrative choices such that the burglar either gets caught or escapes with his loot.

During the workshops you will be introduced to video and audio skills, xhtml, and also PHP scripting which will open the further possibility of building in choices and variables into your narrative flow.

The interactive elements should make use of a wide variety of media, and include in particular, the use of video and audio. Creative use of sound will be especially well received – for example live sound may be used within video clips, but sound an also be used independently (e.g. music, effects, atmospheres), and in fact may be a key factor in the narrative itself.

Develop an idea and an approach to your group solution and create a finished xhtml/php website which demonstrates your narrative idea.

this sounds interesting though, to retell a fairytale through an interactive medium, lots of possibilities im seeing. a list of fairytales:

500.WORDS.

I don't have a usb atm thanks to some c*nt so heres my essay.
GOVERNED: 500 WORD ESSAY
AARON BAREFOOT

IMP

My image “Governed” the virtual world held within this image; this images holds several factors, Technology, CCTV; the “Big Brother” state, all of this brought about by increased surveillance and its uprising and increase along with technological advancement. Its terms of nature it brings with it the earth, human beings, organisms etc, all within the CCTV, within the control, within the big brother state. This was the main attribute to the image. The world being held within the CCTV suggest that the camera itself is the main component and is controlling the world, as opposed to them being side by side, technology holds the dominance.

“Governed” is a crucial word as I feel that through technology the world has become controlled. The more power, (money, weapons, technology) the more say a country has, for example the superpowers who almost hold a monopoly on the world. The cockroach’s outside represent those who hold no power, and are at the mercy of the encroachment of technology and its omnipotence in today’s society. To an extent this worlds fate is determined by our technological advances and prowess, whether that comes from war, pollution, man made disease or any other epidemic than can because through scientific error or mishaps.

There is a real possibility of these things happening, with the rise of Nuclear arms and other elements that create powers and dethrone empires, this also being the technological age, most things we do naturally in our day revolve around technology, whether it be talking to friend over the phone, or getting up to date on the news. Our opinions to an extent are formed by media, inevitably if our thoughts and actions are now governed by technology, isn’t our very nature now including technology. Perhaps a paradox but when does something occur so often and normal that it becomes “natural” everyday occurrence etc.

This also present Marxist theory’s, the powers that be govern and the others go by those rules, the class system could be put forward also, the bourgeoisie holding the most sophisticated technology, and the petite bourgeoisies having the left over’s again a reason why I felt the cockroach was a good symbol for this.

Of course politically is presents some ideas, again with the elements of Marxism and an omnipotent controller above us. However this wasn’t the main intention of the image its just something that I felt was relevant but doesn’t so much conform to the nature and technology elements.

My thoughts regarding the actual image itself in its aesthetic worth, I think it has come out smooth and present a clear ideology that must people have understood upon viewing it. I feel that black and white also works, as essentially black and white is unnatural and presents a more stale and cold presentation of the world. Also black and white looks sleeker and more mechanic and also makes the viewer imagine the colours and pay more attention to the image.

So overall those are the main contributors to my image and I think it came out pretty well, it adheres to the theme and makes a valid point and a statement that I feel is relevant today.

HUMAN.TWO,POINT.0

concept sketch, two woman laid side by side, the one on the right human, the one on oeft being created to replicate her, the future of the fusion of nature and technology, done on my tablet (Y)
the left will have electricals etc, need to develop.

WE.PLAY.GOD

Deconstructing my image; in terms of the basics, nature, represented via the bird of course.

the technoligical side is represented via the exhaust and the pipes that have been crudely added to the animal.

further aspects of the time include the rough treatment of the bird, the scars being displayed to represent the crude nature of the work done on the animal. the bird also being in flight, doing what it already naturally is designed for, yet science feels the need to further edit and distort the way of nature.

image still needs development...

Mortality and technology

Technology can help kill us alive or it can destroy us

So my theme, within nature and technology will be creation and destruction, pestilence and longevity, what are examples of this?

  • Birthing:

Now that birthing is giving technological aid it is become a huge part in repopulation as before hand a large percent* of births would fail. Is this good or bad? This I feel is good, there are more births than there are deaths every second, our core and natural responsibility is to repopulate, technology is now our midwife.

Baby born as a computer?

  • Death:

Those who are kept alive in vegetative states are being kept alive, breathing, heart beating purely by technology, so are they alive? They breath through an iron lung and beat the heart of a machine. Is this good or bad? How does euthanasia come into play, although a religious element of course.

However is it justified to keep someone alive who is simple a corpse that happens to be breathing, has no humanity but by their loved ones is considered to still be a live. You might as well call him mac and plug a usb into him.

Man of life support talking through computer

  • the living process:

Adjustment of the natural, enhancement, namely the subtle modification of what nature has already created, stem cells, artificial limbs, pacemakers all these things are edits to the natural being. Whether the enhancement be worthwhile and justified I think overall this is man playing God with unnecessary things, but with worthwhile elements that actually benefit people and aren’t unnecessary I feel it’s a great aid, whether its an artificial leg 3or a hearing aide.

My bird

  • The Arts

Life doesn’t go about without culture, the arts etc, this one is to me the art of technology, however this piece of art could be considered quite crass, plastic surgery and how it does not enhance man instead put a new face on it, of course this doesn’t relate to enhancement as some unfortunate people NEED plastic surgery instead of people choosing to stuff plastic in their lips.

Doctors holding down, old face trying to get out
its a mask

  • our future with technology:

Will technology soon be the creator and we will edit at its whim? This idea needs development!

Dead person on the floor, new one, human 2.0

So some of these might come out a bit dark, i was listening to Gnaw Their Tounges when I wrote these! check them out, grim!

THISTABLETISMAKINGMEFEELGOOD

hello.

So i got my Bamboo fun medium today, i love it, we are one.
I done my first drawing today, referancing this image of Bjork from the Medulla album.
its a quick sketch, but its made drawing/selection so much easier so hopefully my work will get better!

time for some concepts, brb, LOLZ.

THISTABLETISMAKINGMEHAPPY

So I got my tablet through today, the Bamboo fun medium one and i love it.
I done my first sketch on it, based on an image of Bjork in the Medulla album.

GETTHISBALLROLLING

Ok so I'm going to start doing some work now!

things I need to do:
  • Start off visual diary by creating mind maps of terms Nature and Technology.
  • Start random jotting of ideas..
  • Research into ideas of nature and technology... Look into news articles and other articles of interest.
  • Create mood boards
  • make concept sketchs, explain basic ideaolgy
most of these were borrowed from Matt's blog, thanks Matt.

iAlive.OSX.

a very basic and crude idea at the moment, just so I don't forget, basic idea, the man is "alive" through the computers. technology replacing nature.

ON.BROKEN.WINGS

the three steps show the development, first step line drawing, scanned, second stop basic colours and outlay, third more details etc, fourth final touching ups. I will develop the ideaolgy and look of this and consider it for one of my final images, neato.
  • Meaning:
nature meets machine, the basic theory behind this image is that.
science is beginning to "play god"

yea cus too me its like very crude

its meant to be like quite crude cus obvisouly a bird flies anyway

but sciene is taking away its natural elegance

24 hour brief idea, possibly for Revolution in terms of creation?
an encouter perhaps, animal meets machine, will develop.

  • UPDATE:
the second stage is looking alot better, I stole the eye from a real bird to give it more realism, and fount some smoke jets. I applied the same techniques here, desatured the smoke and lowered the opacity.

  • Process so far:
  • drew the bird, scanned image and done basic colouring on PS.
  • I then added the exhaust to the back of him, doubled the layer and flipped it.
  • I then Quick masked another exhaust and just used to top and placed it on side of the bird.
  • I then quick masked some smoke and edited the angle and opacity. I played around with the order of the layers.
  • I then added the blogs on his wings and again adjusted the layer order.

DAY.BRIEF.

Illustrate one or more of the following words using nature and technology as an overarching theme.

  • DEPTH
  • REVOLUTION
  • ENCOUNTER
  • JOURNEY
  • ELEMENT

REGURGITATE

Very basic concept at the moment, drew the birds, colour on PS, duplicate layer and trasnform to alter a few, the base concept being that baby birds are regurgitated they're (input) want to play on that concept.

I.<3.OBEY

Self drawn heart, coloured on PS
cut out Ipod headphones using Quick mask.

more of an experiment, the concept isnt very strong, but i like the idea of the heart being manipulated by some form of technology.

AND.WITH.HER.CAME.THE.BIRDS

An experimental piece using an image of a young girl on a swing
To do this I first imported her onto a much larger canvas after
cutting her out using the (Q) quick mask option, I first cut her
out on the swing along, I then used the chain ropes shes holding
onto, and after some rotating and resizing using (cmd+t) transform
I made a more vertical and longer swing look. I then linked those
layers.

I then duplicated her, flipped it horozontially until it was the mirror
image, I then groped those 2 and repeated that process.

Tools used:

  • Open (cmd + O)
  • Quick mask (Q)
  • Transform (cmd +T)
  • Blur tool ( to smooth her hair)
  • Link layers, group layers
  • Duplicate layer
